The Paintings of Darryl Nantais & Karl Backhurst

We are delighted to invite you to the Private View of our latest exhibition featuring the work of Darryl Nantais and Karl Backhurst on Friday 26th September 2014 from 6pm to 10pm, when we will be serving wine and canap├ęs.

This exhibition is a happy collaboration between two people who have known each other for over 25 years as patron, client, business partner, colleague and above all great friends. The artwork on display contrasts well between the two artists, on the one hand depicting a detailed, atmospheric, more traditional approach and on the other with strong colour, bold brush strokes and an impressionist style. However a mutual appreciation of sky and water is very evident as inspiration for both artists.

Darryl has been painting all his life from early landscapes of the Little and Great Ouse, to the Norfolk Coast with dramatic skies and then later paintings of The Broads and The Yare from living in Norwich. He gained further inspiration for his paintings through his visits to Paris and his time on the Normandy-Brittany border. He has shared his natural talent through various periods of teaching and Gallery ownership where he has promoted and encouraged up and coming artists. Darryl's strengths lie in observing his surroundings, his strong memory for details and his expert execution to create his paintings. His love and appreciation of nature is very evident from the scenes that he creates.

To write about the other artist is somewhat more problematic as it means writing about myself! With no formal artistic training, I recall enjoyment of art classes at school but did not pursue it further, I came to the world of art through a shared interest with my wife Trina. We always loved visiting galleries, and still do at the slightest opportunity, and that was actually how we first met Darryl. I have now run my own gallery for nearly 15 years and being surrounded by art I found myself with a keen enthusiasm to paint. The opportunity to express myself through painting images that I enjoy has proved to be very rewarding. My inspiration comes from family holidays, stunning landscapes that I have been lucky to experience and artists that I admire such as JMW Turner, and more currently, Robert Kelsey, James Fullarton and of course, my joint exhibitor, Darryl.

We hope that you can come to the Gallery to enjoy our exhibition, which continues until 4pm on Saturday 8th November, we will guarantee you a very warm welcome, Karl.
