Open Studios: Anna Pye, Printmaker

In our series of interviews with members of Cambridge Open Studios we had the pleasure of meeting artist and printmaker Anna Pye whose work is inspired by the countryside, nature, maps and everyday objects.

Have you taken part in Open Studios before?

This is the 3rd time I've taken part in Open Studios.

When visitors come and see you work, will they be able learn about your processes?

People will see me lino cutting and/or pulling a print using my old bookbinding press, a new addition to my studio since the last OS. I enjoy talking to visitors about my work.

What type of work will you be exhibiting this year?

I'll be exhibiting lino and woodcuts, etchings, screenprints, monoprints and drypoints. I have botanical watercolours on show. I also sell notebooks, cards and correspondence cards printed from my designs; print birds and gift tags made from my prints. A new venture is book making and I will have various handmade books for sale.

What attracted you to printmaking?

I took an introductory course in printmaking 2 years ago at The Curwen Print Study Centre at Chilford Hall and loved the different processes involved. I followed this last year by completing the Certificate and Advanced Printmaking Courses over 2 terms at the study centre. I continue to print at the Curwen monthly with my group, Inkline.

You use a few different methods in your printmaking, which is your current favoured method?

I love the diversity of printmaking and the endless creative possibilities it offers. I think lino cutting is my favourite method.

Apart from Open Studios, can we see your work exhibited anywhere else?

I will be exhibiting with the Beds, Bucks and Herts Print Society at the Obsidian Gallery in Stoke Mandeville from 31st August to 16th September. I will be taking part in Herts Open Studios, opening my studio on 15th, 16th, 22nd, 23rd September. I will have a stand at the Ashwell Show on 27th August and at the NSPCC Fair at Anstey Hall, Trumpington on 21st November.
In December I will hold my own Christmas event at home.

Do you have any plans for exhibitions/events/classes in the future?

I hope to run lino printing classes at my house, starting in August. I'm looking forward to sharing my enthusiasm with others.

Anna will be opening her studio as part of Cambridge Open Studios for the first 3 weekends
