CAMBRIDGE PHOTOGRAPHER EXHIBITS LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY FROM ICELAND, SCOTLAND, AND USA, USING VINTAGE CAMERAS AND EXPIRED FILM

Local photographer Tiinateaspoon (Tiina Burton) is showcasing analogue colour landscapes from her travels in Iceland, New York, and Scotland in her solo exhibition at Rhode Island in Cherry Hinton.

Private View: Friday 03/07/15 19:00 - 21:00 - join us for the launch of this exhibition, with special guest Alan https://baggelboy.wordpress.com playing atmospheric music to set the mood.

Exhibition runs: 01/07/15 – 12/08/15 at venue: Rhode Island, Cherry Hinton

The ethereal imagery in Tiina’s exhibition is drawn from a series of recent trips to Iceland, Scotland and New York. This is a rare opportunity to view a selection of her colour prints, as the majority of her work to date is shot on black and white film.

“I’m drawn to the wild places of the world. This started when I was small, being encouraged to explore in the woods on family holidays to Finland. It has instilled in me a deep awe of nature and the freedom to roam in it.

Combining walking with film photography means lugging around a lot of equipment. I often carry four cameras and a selection of film. Each photograph is a moment where I’ve stopped walking, taken a breath, decided it’s worth the cost of the film, and then waited until the film is developed to find out if it even worked. This all helps me show another, contemplative view of the world.

With expired colour film everything has a softness and dreamlike colour shifts. The use of old technology un-moors the pictures from time, displacing them from current reality.”

In addition to photography, Tiina is a clothing designer and works as a BA Fashion lecturer at Cambridge School of Visual & Performing Arts.

Technical details: The landscape format photographs are captured using a 35mm Canon camera on expired film. The square format photographs are shot with a vintage Diana medium format plastic toy camera on expired film, and the polaroids are taken with her 1980s Polaroid Spirit 600 instant camera using Impossible film.
